Why I Doula

My own motherhood journey began in Stuttgart Germany. In Germany they are more natural/physiological birth oriented and midwives replace L&D nurses completely in all hospitals and birth suites with OBs only becoming part of birth if there is a medical indicator/emergency.

My first birth was a challenge for me, one which I was unprepared to meet, and it was not easy. After a 40-hour labor which led to exhaustion, and unplanned Pitocin, epidural, vacuum delivery and episiotomy, I walked away feeling disappointed in my body but happy to be a mother. My postpartum healing journey was also a long and rough road and I was told often that things I was experiencing were normal, which I now know they absolutely were NOT. Those difficulties motivated me to make some changes. The next time I was pregnant, I took a birth preparation course, read multiple books and gained tools for labor. I invested the time daily to prepare my body and mind with practices such as meditation, affirmations, exercise and yoga. I rocked that birth and it was truly transformative. I walked away feeling powerful and strong. I remember thinking “if I can do that, I can do anything” That feeling has permeated motherhood and my entire life and instilled me with a confidence in self for which I am forever grateful

This experience inspired me to become a birth worker and help women put their feet on the path to a powerful, positive birth. Imagining a world where women enter motherhood with the same feelings I do inspires me, and I truly believe that changing the way we birth can change the world.

My goal as a doula is to educate, empower, and support mothers during their birth and postpartum journey.

Birth is a tremendous and transformative labor of love, ripe with both challenges and rewards. I believe in the immense power of a positive birth experience that empowers women and men to begin parenthood with joy and confidence. My goal is to help parents create positive memories of birth, regardless of the challenges that arise. I approach being a doula with a dedication to working openly with the unique perspective, abilities, challenges, and needs of laboring mothers and their support team. With an attentive and wholehearted presence, I aid women and their support team with physical and emotional comfort measures, pain coping methods, relaxation techniques, understanding of birth physiology, communication with medical staff, and supported involvement of a partner or birth companion.

I love this work.
