What is placenta encapsulation?
Placenta encapsulation is a gentle way to honor the incredible life-giving organ that nourished your baby throughout pregnancy. It involves transforming your placenta into easy-to-consume capsules, allowing you to reclaim its vital nutrients and hormones as you transition into motherhood.
While research is ongoing, many mothers share their experiences of increased energy, balanced moods, improved milk production, and a smoother physical recovery after encapsulating their placenta. It’s a beautiful way to support your body’s natural healing wisdom.

Placenta Encapsulation FAQ
Think of placenta encapsulation as a way to honor the organ that nurtured your baby for nine months. It’s the process of transforming your placenta into a supplement you can take during your postpartum period. By steaming, dehydrating, and grinding it into a fine powder, we are able to place it into capsules for easy consumption. It’s a way for many to continue feeling a deep connection to their birth journey and support their body’s recovery.
There are a couple of widely used methods for preparing the placenta, both rooted in the wisdom of respecting this powerful organ.
- Raw Method: Following a gentle cleaning, the placenta is sliced and immediately dehydrated before being ground and encapsulated. This approach aims to preserve all of the raw, nutrient-dense properties of the placenta.
- Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Method: This is a more warming and holistic approach. The placenta is first steamed with healing herbs like ginger and lemon before being dehydrated and encapsulated. This method is believed to bring more warmth back to the body and support a gentle postpartum recovery.
We will work with you to decide which method feels most aligned with your body and your healing journey.
While the science behind placenta encapsulation is still emerging, the anecdotal evidence from countless birthing people speaks volumes. Many who have chosen this path report a variety of powerful benefits, and we believe it is important to hear and honor their experiences. Some of the most commonly reported benefits include:
- Emotional Balance: Many people feel that taking placenta capsules helps to stabilize the wild ride of postpartum hormones, making the transition into motherhood feel more grounded and supported. It can help to ease the “baby blues” and contribute to an overall sense of emotional well-being.
- Restored Energy: As your body recovers from the marathon of birth, placenta capsules are thought to help replenish vital nutrients, particularly iron. This can provide a much-needed boost in energy to help you navigate the early days and weeks with your new baby.
- Nurturing Milk Production: Some people report an increase in their breast milk supply, which can bring a greater sense of confidence and ease to their feeding journey.
We approach all our services with a deep respect for your safety. Like any food product, improper handling of the placenta can lead to contamination. It is essential to choose a specialist who is trained in strict food safety and bloodborne pathogen protocols to ensure your capsules are prepared in a clean and safe environment.
Because this practice is not currently regulated by a governing body, it is a matter of trust and care. We are committed to using the highest standards of safety and transparency in every step of our process.
This is a beautiful and important question that speaks to the heart of informed, empowered choices. Your specialist will have a protocol for handling a GBS-positive placenta to ensure the utmost safety. The steaming process used in the TCM method is specifically designed to reach temperatures high enough to kill bacteria like GBS. We will walk you through all the safety measures and help you make a decision that feels right for you and your baby, grounded in both evidence and your own intuition.
We understand that a birth plan is more of a guide than a guarantee, and sometimes our journeys take unforeseen twists.
In some rare cases, a placenta may not be suitable for encapsulation. This can happen if there is an infection (like chorioamnionitis), if it was not handled and stored properly at the hospital, or if there were other significant complications. Our specialist will assess the placenta’s condition and communicate with you if any concerns arise.
If, for any reason, your placenta cannot be safely encapsulated, we will provide you with a full refund. While we know this can be disappointing, we believe in prioritizing your health and safety above all else. Your journey is sacred, and our commitment to you extends to every part of it.
